After reading through this post and the comments I'd like to offer a few important points. First, when your toenail is damaged, the damaged nail needs to grow out. The damaged nail cannot be cured or repaired. By eliminating the fungal infection and healing the area around the damaged nail, your new toenail can grow in healthy and normal. The second point is a toenail infection is contagious. If you have a nail fungus be sure you don't share your nail clippers with another family member, room mate or friend. The third point is a new nail can take up to 6 months to grow out. Be cautious of anyone offering a product claiming less time for a new nail. A toenail will grow at a much slower rate than a fingernail.

My big toe nail has become loose from the skin under the nail. I have cleaned out underneath the nail and I'm not sure if I should cut this back and let it re grow? It is not thick or yellow but is loose almost to the moon of nail.

I have just come back from the chiropodists and had what she called a 'dulakis [or dukalis] corn' removed from the left edge of my little toe, it was a hard sliver of nail or skin growing outwards from side of my little toe and previously had to have a similar one removed from the same little toe six months ago, the chiropodist said it would probably keep coming back no cure other than surgery. The nail was very sore and keeps catching etc although it's ok now. Have been searching internet etc for any information on this affliction and cannot find anything at all, can anyone enlighten me?
many thanks

Great post! There is nothing to be embarrassed or ashamed about when visiting a Podiatrist! A Podiatrist is fully trained in dealing with all aspects of foot problems and they will have seen hundreds of pairs of feet and hundreds of ingrown toenails!

Home remedies are great to begin with but if you think you may have an infection you need to seek medical help from a Podiatrist.

@ Nicole: I am sorry, although I am a health practitioner, I'm not an expert on toe nail growth. I'm just sharing information that I research. The best thing to do would be to get some advice from a qualified chiropodist.

Thank you for the article and for publishing a attractive site. I have been searching for honest info on natural health and will put these recommendations to use. I have found it hard to locate reliable information, as there are so many web sites with useless articles. Please keep it flowing!
